Education and Teaching Career

  • After graduating in Science (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) in 1973 (B.Sc, University of Mysore), passed the Bachelors in Library and Information Science, with a gold medal and Karnataka State Government Award and went on to do a Masters (University of Mysore, 1975) and Ph D (University of Mysore, 1993) in Library and Information Science. Realizing the importance of computers in information work I successfully completed the Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications (PGDCA) in 1989 (University of Mysore).
  • Participated in the ‘On the job Training’ at the Centre for Scientific and Technological Information, Tel Aviv, Israel (May-June 1979) and two month International Graduate Summer School at the University of Wales, UK (July-August 1981)
  • Joined the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore as a faculty in 1976.  Recently retired as a professor and have 41 years of teaching / research experience.

  • Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia, USA, August 2000 – February 2001

  • Since 1995, blending teaching with practical experience in building digital libraries (through sponsored projects)
  • Considered as star performer by the Academic Audit Committee set up by the University of Mysore in its assessment report 2005
  • Coordinated the UGC-SAP programme at the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore from 2007 to 2010
  • Executed the Ford Foundation funded Project to set up an innovative educational Institute – International School of Information Management (ISiM), University of Mysore (more details on the website – www.isim.ac.in).
  • Some of the salient innovations introduced @ ISiM  are –
    • Setting it up as an autonomous institute (a registered society) with its own Governing Board and modeled as a Public-Private-Partnership endeavor.
    • A novel educational model – inverse of distance education, where in the school and the students on site and the faculty is drawn from a ‘distributed network of excellence’.
    • Engagement with industry – in teaching and mentoring students. WikiGyan project @ISiM is an exemplar

Given the volatility of the Indiandigital libraries, it is a major accomplishment. Vidyanidhi is the first choice of seekers of information on Indian Doctoral Research

Local Professional Activities

  • Believing in the adage, Think Global, Act Local, have demonstrated my professional commitment at the local level by founding the Mysore Library and Information Scientists Association (MyLISA) in 2001, which is one of the very active professional bodies in India. Editing and brining out the MyLISA Bulletin.
  • My concern and commitment to my own Departmental growth and development is reflected in the following
    • Establishment of MILAN (Mysore  University Information and Library Alumni Network), 2014
    • Instituted the Informatics Endowment Lecture Series in 2001
    • Instituted the H. A. Khan felicitation Cash Prize in 1995
    • Established the IT lab in the Department of LIS, 1989
    • Organizing special lectures and professional programmes
    • Promoting students activities through students’ association – MULISSA, Mentoring students to build international linkages and learning experience through collaborative international students’ assignments projects with students of Penn State University and University of Tennessee.
    • Writing and submitting a proposal for the University Grants Commission (UGC), Special Assistance Programme and successful in getting grants of INR 300,000 for the Department of Library and Information Science of the University of Mysore.

USA. Been a companion and consultant to my husband – Prof. D. Shrijay Devaraj Urs, former Registrar and Professor of Institute of Development Studies, University of Mysore.
